Jost Van Dyke: Explore the BVI Neighborhood
If you find yourself eager to explore the BVI Neighborhood while staying with us at Oil Nut Bay, we encourage you to head over to Jost Van Dyke. More commonly referred to by locals as, ”Yost,”, this island is perfect for a boating excursion and bar hopping.
At only three square miles, Jost Van Dyke is the smallest of the four main islands in the BVI and similar to Anegada, it has a small population of a few hundred people. Located a bit northwest of Tortola and north of St. John, it is accessible by boat or ferry service from Tortola’s West End.
Many of our Oil Nut Bay guests experience Jost Van Dyke with a Dive BVI Island Hopper excursion. Our staff can easily make arrangements for you. It leaves from our neighboring resort, Biras Creek, on Thursdays. You spend the day on a boat, snorkeling, having lunch and stopping at Soggy Dollar Bar at White Bay on Jost Van Dyke, as well as Norman Island and Tortola.
Soggy Dollar Bar is known as the birthplace of the famous BVI drink, the Painkiller, a delicious combination of rum, cream of coconut, orange juice, pineapple juice, and nutmeg. Many boats moor out front and the guest to swim right up to the beach to grab a drink.
White Bay is known for its stunning white sand beach and famous BVI turquoise waters. If you’re a country music fan, you’ll be pleased to know that Kenny Chesney’s music video for ”No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem”, was partially filmed at a White Bay location, Ivan’s Stress Free Bar and campground. Ivan’s lives up to its name, as you make your own drinks and keep your own tab.
Foxy’s, located at Great Harbor on the eastern side of the island, is another well known Yost bar and restaurant. If you tell Foxy, the owner, where you hail from, he will greet you in song about your hometown, riddled with a surprising amount of facts. While Soggy Dollar is more of a day bar, Foxy’s is known for their nightlife and huge New Year’s beach party.
Jost is a great location for a boating excursion stop, a refreshing painkiller or just a relaxing day in the sand. We at Oil Nut Bay encourage you to explore the BVI neighborhood and experience Jost Van Dyke for yourself!
